The dedication that took place the morning of October 5, 2013 at Jessica Ridgeway Memorial Park was beautiful. Hundreds of people of all ages came despite the cold, and as the voices of those speaking carried across the field the sun shone brightly, the air started to warm, and a soft breeze swept through the crowd making everyone's cheeks a little rosy. A single butterfly was spotted by the crowd the moment the Butterfly Pavilion was explaining how it was too cold to do a butterfly release today. ♥ In many ways, we felt Jessica with us, smiling down on all those who have grown to love her as they celebrated her life and her Legacy.

Nancy McNally, the Mayor of the City of Westminster asked, "Who knew Jessica and went to school with her?" and all the little ones at the front of the stage raised their hands. The Mayor asked them to remember Jessica and talk about her, to help others get to know Jessica and have her live on through them. It was a very touching moment. ♥ She reminded the Ridgeway family, "This community stands behind you."

Westminster Police Chief Lee Birk fought back tears as he addressed the crowd.

"As beautiful as this park is, and as much as the community will enjoy it, what Jessica leaves us as a legacy is much bigger than a park," Birk said. "In Jessica's short life, she taught us to love more and care more. She reminded us how precious life is and how fleeting it can be."

Police officers who worked on the case — 75 agencies assisted — "are profoundly touched by it and feel as if Jessica was our own daughter," Birk said.

The new park features things that are symbolic of Jessica including the colors green and purple, which were her favorite colors. Throughout the park, there are stones etched with knock-knock jokes on them, because she loved to tell knock-knock jokes. Jessica's grandmother, Christine also spoke before the crowd, and thanked them for all their support over the past year. "One year ago yesterday my family and friends had a 10-year-old, bubbly, happy, darling little girl named Jessica

. Today I can't see Jessica. But, I can see neighbors and a community who came together to search and support us when the news about Jessica came out, even though they didn't know her or us," Christine said. "I see people who helped create a park full of Jessicas, smiles and love. What I don't see is a reminder of what happened to Jessica, but a place of fun." Christine looked out at Jessica's classmates standing solemnly before the stage and told them, "Go play. Jessica would not want you standing here mourning her." But they stayed.

The Butterfly Pavilion was going to do a butterfly release at the dedication, but it was too cold - at which point a single butterfly was spotted by the crowd. They gave Sarah Ridgeway this beautiful gift and plan on doing a butterfly release at Jessica's park at a later date when the weather is warmer.

Jessica's family did a special balloon release for Jessica at the end of the Dedication Ceremony. 10 balloons representing the 10 years of Jessica's short life. ♥

And then, scores of children did play — twirling, twisting and testing their climbing skills on the playground apparatus. The classmates supplied park designers with the jokes. Examples: • Knock knock. Who's there? Abner. Abner who? Abner-noon, pard-ner. • Knock knock. Who's there? Alex. Alex who? Alex the questions around here. • Knock knock. Who's there? A little old lady. A little old lady who? I didn't know you could yodel. Reading these words as she stood on the green cement forced retired fifth-grade teacher Janelle Bratten, 62, to turn in circles like a child. She loves Jessica's park, she said. "This is who she is." 9 News http://www.9news.com/rss/story.aspx?storyid=358494 The Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/environment/ci_24247673/westminster-park-dedicated-slain-10-year-old-jessica
